Thomas Michel (b. 1966, Darmstadt, Germany) is a contemporary artist based in Bamberg whose work investigates the relationship between perception, image systems, and visual knowledge. Working across painting, drawing, and digital media, Michel develops visual environments that challenge habitual ways of seeing and question how images shape the understanding of reality.

A recurring focus in his practice is the dialogue between historical visual traditions and contemporary technological culture. His works often combine traditional craftsmanship with digital methodologies, creating visual systems that connect analog image-making with algorithmic processes.

Since the early 1990s, Michel has presented his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and internationally, including exhibitions at the Kunstverein Bamberg, Kunsthaus Nürnberg, Stadtgalerie Bamberg Villa Dessauer, the Galeria Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales in Havanna/Cuba and the Hismoon Galerie in Taicang/China.

Earlier projects such as Darwinland explored evolutionary narratives and the visualization of scientific knowledge. These investigations continue in recent interdisciplinary projects developed in collaboration with scientific institutions, including the site-specific exhibition Dead As a Dodo?, created in cooperation with the Naturkundemuseum Bamberg.

Alongside his artistic work, Michel holds a degree in Industrial Design from the University of Applied Sciences Munich. His professional experience in industrial and footwear design has contributed to his deep understanding of material processes, visual systems, and the relationship between function and perception — aspects that inform his artistic methodology.
